Artist Biography: Cyan

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Cyan became a musical force in his native land while quite young, holding concerts and winning the EXIT television and radio show competitions not long after his eighteenth birthday. Talent and determination enabled him to build on that early success and sign a contract with PICAP, a top independent label in Catalonia.

Dubbed “the Messenger” by the Catalonian pop music scene because of his ability to connect with the struggles and realities of his audience through deeply moving lyrics, Cyan arrived in the States in 2001 to work on a musical project. He calls this phase of his career “one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.”

Sheer tenacity—he was selling flags on the street at one point to make the payments on his car insurance—kept Cyan focused on his goal, and he began to perform at clubs accompanied only by his guitar.

One of these shows led to an invitation from BMG Publishing for lunch because John Exevarria, the president of Universal Music Latino, wanted to hear more songs.

The association led to a publishing contract with Universal and, ultimately, a move to Los Angeles. It was there that his musical vision really coalesced as he incorporated multicultural influences from his French father and Catalonian mother.

As a co-writer for international recording artist Chayanne’s “Cuidarte El Alma,” Cyan earned critical and industry acclaim. The song rose to the top of Billboard’s Hot Latin charts and held its position for several weeks; was nominated for Song of the Year for Univision’s Premios Lo Nuestro; won Songwriter of the Year at the 2004 Telemundo Premios De La Gente awards; and won Song of the Year at the 2005 BMI Awards.

Cyan decided to produce his own music soon after, and the EP “Cloud” resulted. In his newest work he has remained true to his art, crafting soulful lyrics and fusion-inspired melodies that resonate with his worldwide audience.

Joining him is an impressive array of songwriters and musicians, all of whom have enjoyed artistic success in their own right: Arnie Roman, who has written for Celine Dion, Oletta Adams, Marc Anthony and Cher; Nina Ossoff, a collaborator with Patti Austin, B Four, and The Temptations; and Luis Enrique, a writer for Gloria Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra and Arturo Sandoval.

He attributes the success of his latest venture to hard work and people who were “open to possibilities and open to dreams.” There’s no doubt that doors will continue to open for this engaging world music talent.
