Songs (by George Canseco)

Amapola's career took her around the world doing solo concerts, and cabaret performances onboard some of the world's most luxurious ships, notably the Royal Viking Lines Fleet: Royal Viking Sun, Sea, Sky and Star, followed by a 7 year career as headliner onboard the MS Song of Flower owned by the Seven Seas Cruises, now Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Amapola established herself as an entertainment icon in her country, receiving recognition for her excellence as a television host, recording artist, as a motion picture actress (playing feature and lead roles plus others as a child star, & singing the musical scores for many others), as an instrumentalist (playing 8 musical instruments & excelling at classic piano), & as a TV & Radio personality - hosting "Amapola Presents" on KEMO-TV 20 in San Francisco, California.

"A Love Without A Name", is a Nostalgia Collection of some of her Gold hits recorded from 1970 until the present year. The CD begins with the Title theme that her father Mahnee Cabase played for her in April of 2003. In September, Cabase had a stroke and died 23rd of December, the same year. Lyricist of the song, Sheila Cabase – Amapola’s mother passed away 22 days thereafter. “This song is very precious to me and my parents. It was a labor of love. We recorded it because we loved the song. We had no intentions of publishing it at all. Now, I must share it with the world,” Amapola intimated.

CD Album Tracks:

“Secret Love” written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster & published by WB MUSIC CORP, was Amapola’s second Gold hit from her album Songs and Amapola in the Pioneer Label of Vicor Records. It followed her first Gold hit – “Never”. Both singles enjoyed being in the Top Ten at the same time!

“Forbidden Games” – A Spanish guitar favorite entitled “Romanza”, this song hit the airwaves before Amapola left for her first concert tour abroad. She co-starred with several Filipino stars in a Hawaiian Islands tour that culminated at the Honolulu International Concert Hall where Elvis kicked off his return engagements in the same year. This song was an instant Jukebox Favorite in Asia.

“Cherry Blossoms” – Written & Directed by Jose Mari Chan, one of Asia’s most accomplished entertainer, this song was a theme from the motion picture of the same name shot in its entirety in Hong Kong. This was the fourth movie theme Amapola recorded within two years of her new found fame in Manila. Her first award winning movie theme was a song written by George Canseco entitled “Kapantay Ay Langit.” "Cherry Blossoms" is published by Jose Mari Chan.

“The Story of A Starry Night” – Based on Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 Pathetique with lyrics written by: Mann Curtis / Al Hoffman / Jerry Livingston, published by SPIRIT TWO MUSIC OBO HALLMARK MUSIC COMPANY Y
MANN CURTIS Y CHAPPELL & CO. Amapola sang this song in her second film as leading lady in the film entitled “You Are My Destiny”. The master tape of this song was long gone but one of Amapola’s fans rescued a reel to reel tape which was copied from a 45 rpm! “This song,” Amapola explains, “will be full of scratchy bits and will sound raw having gone through so much before we laid our hands on the material. I just had to include this lovely song in this album to round out the nostalgia from the 70s to the present. Thank you for your patience and understanding. This is the first time the song will be heard after its debut Valentines Day 1972.”

“Songs” – Words and Music by George Canseco, born April 23, 1934 and died November 19, 2004. George Canseco who published his own composition, was a leading composer of the Philippines, if not Asia. Considered by some to be one of the most sentimental men of his time, Canseco gave birth to songs that allowed hearts to heal over cathartic bliss in the hundreds of songs he wrote. He left behind a pop-culture legacy unmatched by many of his peers. (Source: Wikipedia). When Amapola last saw Canseco in one of her Manila concerts at the Playboy Club, she asked him why he never composed another song for her, after she recorded “Kapantay Ay Langit” and “Songs”. Canseco replied: “I wrote those two songs with you in mind, and I did not think I could top them.” Canseco however, had topped himself each time he wrote another love song.

“Be a Friend – Amapola wrote this song with the country of Costa Rica in mind. She visited the country often during her two year Panama Canal season onboard the Royal Viking Sky and their motto of “Make Love Not War” stuck in Amapola’s mind since then. When she came home to San Francisco, one of her concerts was backed up by famous New York jazz pianist – Mitch Kerper. It was Kerper who helped Amapola see her potential as a songwriter.

“Sa Dulo Ng Ating Landas” ( translates – At the end of our journey or path), medley with “It’s Great to Be Young” – Music composed by Amapola’s father, Mahnee Cabase. Lyrics by Sat. A. Villarino and Sheila Cabase. This beautiful medley of two contrasting songs were sung together for the film of the same title. “Sa Dulo Ng Ating Landas” - the story about a mother and her daughter. The medley was sung by both mother and daughter in a split screen feature, where both were in different locations while the mother was searching in vain for her long lost daughter. Published by Mahnee & Sheila Cabase.

“George Canseco Tribute” – A medley of three of Canseco’s biggest hits up to that year. Canseco had composed dozens of hits after that, but these three remained his favorites: Kapantay Ay Langit (Just like Heaven, or As High or As Great as the Sky), Ngayon at Kailan Man (Now and Forever), Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo (If You Leave Me). This medley was lifted from “Amapola, Live! At the Manila Hotel”. Backed up by 33 people on stage, the medley encompasses Canseco’s lifetime achievement as a songwriter. This tribute was arranged by Amapola, scored by Mahnee Cabase, and published by George Canseco.
